Light and electron microscopic studies on the effect of mastication in mouse submandibular gland

Abstract
Light and electron microscopic studies were performed to investigate the effect of mastication activity on mouse submandibular gland. The following results were obtained.
1. The group fed on one part pellet mixed with five parts water showed increased gland weight by third week but thereafter the gland weight was gradually decreased compared to the control. Whereas, the group fed on one part pellet mixed with ten parts water showed decreased gland weight by second week, but the gland weight increased at third and forth week compared to the control.
2. In light microscopy, the control group showed well developed acini, intercalated duct and granular convoluted tubules. Whereas, the group fed on one part pellet mixed with ten parts water showed atrophic acini at only second week but showed nearly same Size as that of control group after administration of pellet for two weeks. The group fed on one part pellet mixed with five parts water didn¢¥t show remarkable changes compared to the controL
3. In electron microscopy, the serous cells of the control group showed well developed rough endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi apparatus and many secretory granules. The mucous acini ells of the control group showed well developed rough endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi apparatus and mucoid granules. The serous cells of the group fed on one part pellet mixed with ten parts water showed some ribosomes detached from rough endoplasmic reticulum, few secretory granules and many lipid droplets in cytoplasm. The mucous acini of the group fed on one part pellet mixed with ten parts water showed some ribosomes detached from rough endoplasmic reticulum, many fused mucoid granules, lipid droplets and irregular atrophic nucleus in cytoplasm.
These results suggest that mucous cell are more active than serous cell in secretion activity and mucous cell of mouse submandibular gland are more remarkable changes than serous cell in cell organelles after administration of liquid diet.
